Methanogens are prokaryotic microorganisms, specifically archaeas that live in anaerobic environments. They obtain energy when producing natural gas, methane (CH4). This type of organism is crucial to the degradation of organic matter in nature , found in the carbon cycle, and of great ecological importance. Methanogens are a philogenetically heterogeneous where the common denominator is methane gas production.
