Environmental Certification System for Educational Organizations Project

Environmental Certification System for Educational Organizations ProjectThe National Environmental Certification System for Educational Organizations (NECSEO) has the objectives of contributing to the improvement of quality of education in Chile, promote education sustainability in Chile, and play a part on a cultural change through the promotion of environmentally responsible conducts. Throughout 2007 the URBASER-KIAS Group of companies signed a collaboration agreement with CONAF RM with the purpose of supporting environmental education. We are setting up programs to implement the National Environmental Certification System for Educational Organizations (primary and high schools in this case) in communities belonging to the Mayors Council of Cerros de Renca, in the Greater Santiago metro area. Also, in the communities of Maipú and La Reina.

In 2006, we worked jointly with CONAF RM in 36 schools in the Metropolitan Region’s following communities: Cerro Navia, Colina, Conchalí, Huechuraba, La Florida, La Reina, Lampa, Las Condes, Lo Prado, Maipú, Providencia, Pudahuel, Quilicura, Recoleta, and Santiago.

We were able to affect 25,000 students through a three day environmental-related subject training courses given to 153 teachers at the Rio Clarillo National Reserve.

Environmental Monitors Training

We partner this training effort with different municipalities and it is aimed to young people who want to become Environmental Monitors. The objective of the training is for these young people to become communicators in the appropriate handling of residential waste. We show them how we manage waste collection and its final disposal. We include a training module on communications in order to assure the monitors will be able to properly convey the message. The course has a 15-hour duration.

Guided visits to our Facilities

We are convinced that our commitment with our customers, employees, and the environment is transparent. For this reason, we have a guided visits program to our facilities such as Transfer Plants, Sanitary Landfills, Waste Collection Centers, and Recycling Centers. The visitors are able to see the processes involved in the management of waste, as well as the technologies and procedures we utilize on these activities.

Andean Condor Conservation Program

Andean Condor Conservation ProgramFrom the first day of operations at the Loma Los Colorados Sanitary Landfill, we noticed a strong population of Andean Condors. Then the condors would visit the site during the winter months. Today, we co-exist with them year-round.

A great number of condors gather every night on large cliff formations called “condoreras” or “buitreras”. At Loma Los Colorados, the condors’ nesting areas are on the cliffs located on the east and west walls of the Huechún hill, south of our sanitary landfill. From this safe haven, the condors fly away every morning in search of food or head toward the Andes mountain range.

Conservation Project Objectives:

  • To survey the condor population visiting the Loma Los Colorados Sanitary Landfill and find out how they use it. We want to diagnose and prevent any negative impacts to their well being.
  • To gather data on the use of the landfills by the condors through time and surface area occupied.
  • To document their feeding habits within the landfill, their main feeding spots within and around the landfill. In addition, to research the alternative food sources in company lands surrounding the sanitary landfill.
  • To evaluate the general health of the condor population visiting the sanitary landfill.
  • To implement the necessary policies that will preserve a healthy condor population and their habitat.

KDM S.A. want to thank the collaboration of Eduardo Pavez Galvez, a an experienced and recognized expert on the Andean Condor.
